Middle Distance

The IOC 2017 Middle Distance area previously used for the IOC 2013 Relay. It is part of the north facing slopes above Leam and consists of open heather-covered terrain with much contour and rock detail.

The runnability is generally very good but it is more hilly and marshy then the Relay and Classic areas.  There are few linear features.

All courses cross open heath land; participants are advised to carry a whistle. A waterproof/windproof garment, No go’ rule may be enforced depending on the weather at the time of the event. This decision will be displayed at the assembly area. Competitors are strongly advised to bring a waterproof/windproof garment and warm clothing in any case

Parking & Bus Transfer

Parking will be at Glengowla Mines west of Oughterard. Participants will be transported by bus to the competition area. Buses will depart from 1500hrs.  Further details and timetable will be available closer to the event.

Control descriptions will be on the map.  Control descriptions can be downloaded and printed. Loose control descriptions will not be available on the day.


Start List for Middle Distance.

Starts are from 1600hrs to 1800hrs.  Warm up will be on the road to the start.  The Start for Day 1 is 600m from the Assembly area.

Important: Elite competitors must read this information about the elite start process.

There will be 2 start lanes: one for Elites who are using a non-punch start and one for all others who are using a punch start.

General Information

  • Toilets will be available in the Assembly area
  • The start and finish are only a short distance apart
  • There will be no clothing transfer
  • A tent will be available for clothes storage in the Assembly area
  • Competitors must punch at the finish line and must then proceed to the download station at the motorhome in the Assembly area.
  • Courses close at 1930hr.  All runners must finish before this time.
  • Hired SI cards may be collected at Motorhome in assembly area. Lost or damaged cards will be charged at €30 each

In addition, the following non-championship classes are available: Men’s Short, Women’s Short, Light-Green, Orange, Yellow
